Large numbers of firms in the Yorkshire area are failing to seek much-needed emergency Government grants to help them during the COVID-19 crisis, according to York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)

The Government first announced the financial support measures to keep smaller businesses afloat during the crisis back in March, with these including Business Support Grants targeted at sectors worst affected – like Leisure, Hospitality and Retail – and the Small Business Grant Scheme.

Since then, thousands of Yorkshire firms have sought emergency help, but the LEP is warning that many others are failing to do so and putting their futures at risk. The various schemes set up by the Government can potentially provide firms with either £25,000 or £10,000, based on factors such as rateable value, to help tide them over throughout the lockdown.

Those Yorkshire firms that meet the criteria are being informed by their borough or district council, but the LEP is stating that while many have supplied the necessary information and received grants, others seem unsure on what they need to do. Uncertainty over financial matters is why local firms often employ a specialist small business accountant in South Yorkshire or other parts of the area.

The LEP chairman, David Kerfoot, said that given how tough the current situation is for businesses in the area, it is vital that they take advantage of any financial assistance that is being offered. He concluded by urging those firms that have not done so yet to contact their council as quickly as possible.
